Actually it should read like this:

We were worthless and so He sent His only begotten Son to redeem us!

Granted we have worth because, even in our fallen sinful state, we still 
bear to some degree the image of God (hence we are not to murder) but 
our sin makes us unpleasant in God's most holy sight.
