Brian,
Nature often leaves us with wide open spaces on top of our heads. I think
Paul is referring to the balding process as a natural illustration. Also,
he could be referring to the temple male prostitutes which would have long
hair. Their very act against nature, and the long hair as a symbol of that
act against nature, could be what he is alluding too.
Just thoughts,
Mike Cantrell

Hey Gang! Another thread on the worldly thing. Paul talks about men
having short hair in this verse in 1 Cor. 11: 14 Does not the very nature
of things teach you that if a man has long hair,
it is a disgrace to him So then my question becomes this: what about Native
Americans? I grew up on the reservations (and am part Native American), and
it was "the
very nature of things" for a man to have long, flowing hair. Knowing and
believing that God is NEVER wrong, how do we deal with this?
Unfortunately, the church has a horrendous history in its treatment of
Native Americans, and even my step-mother will never come to Christ, aside
from a miracle akin to the parting of the Red Sea because of how she was
treated as a child, both within the Catholic Church and in government
schools. The boys were forced to cut their hair, wear "civilized"
clothing,
etc. Chuck Swindoll once said, "It's not an issue of scissor-length. It's
an
issue of masculinity and femininity. If someone can't look at a man and
tell he's a man, that's bad." Basically he's saying that if a man can wear
his long hair in a way that communicates that he is a man, then it's okay.
Same with women who have short hair, wearing it in a feminine style. Brian
