Hi Pastor Les:
I have you all beat. I've been pastoring for 49 years, and I agree that
we can not - yea, we must not compromise our stand on the Word of God!
People have deviated from it by allowing worldly (i.e., doing things the
way the world does without regard to God's feelings in the matter)
practices to come into the church.
Music is okay if it glorifies God. Instruments are okay if used for
God's glory. The harp, lyre ( a small harp), the timbrels, the sackbut
(whatever that is), etc., can, and have been used for God's glory. Many
of our hymns come from socalled worldly music, but have been used for
God's glory, I have a problem with socalled "Christian Rock." That does
nothing to edify me. We have worked with Child Evangelism, who, with
permission, take worldly music and add Christian (i.e., Christ honoring)
words. No one knows how many children (and adults) have found Christ
through music.
I am, even now, listening to our local classical music station. The
music, for the most part is beautiful, and gives me cause to thank God
for the beauty that people have written down in the form of music.
The Bible says that "everything God has made is good." Genesis 1:31.
"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold,
it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day."
Unfortunately, people have taken what God called good, and through
Satan's inspiration, made it to become evil. May we pastors, teach
people Biblical principles which edify our blessed Savior.
Because of Calvary, yours,
Delmer G. Lawson
Jesus loves you, and I do too
