It might make a grieving parent feel better for the moment, but assuring
them extra-scripturally that their child is guaranteed in heaven won't
ultimately be doing them a favor.

I think Moe is right.

You have to direct their pain to trust in Christ.
Presumably, if they're Christian, they already have faith, but that doesn't
mean they don't still need growth in fully trusting Him as their Lord and
God, who is in control, can be trusted, and needs to be clung to.  If their
joy and peace are in Christ, then this too is something they can and must
relinquish to Him, whom they can trust.

My wife miscarried at 16 weeks 1 year ago, and ultimately we found our peace
about it in relinquishing it all to our sovereign God.  Our hope is still
that our child will greet us in heaven, but our peace is not from believing
it must be true.  Rather it is in entrusting her completely to Christ Jesus,
who works all things out for the good of us, who love him.
And that is the key.  We love Him more than needing to know without doubt
our baby is in heaven.  He is enough for us.  His grace is sufficient for
us.  This too He will work out for our good.  I don't need to know for
certain any more than that.

Surprisingly even to us, this explanation was fully sufficient for our 3
other children as well.  They could let it go, because they trust Jesus.

Like every other trial in life, losing a child is a faith-stretching
experience.
When we try to short-circuit a brother or sister's grief by covering it with
shallow faith, we don't really help the parents grow in their faith, and
ultimately we don't really alleviate the grief and worry.  Letting it turn
into deeper faith in Jesus is the only thing that will heal that grief, and
strengthen that follower of Christ.

Situations like this are times when we must help God's children begin living
as though the things they believe about him are actually true.
Not a single Christian you meet will disagree with Rom 8:28, but very few
regularly live as though it's actually true.  Grief and pain and misery are
tangled up with living as though it might not be.
Trials challenge us to not just believe it's true, but live as if we are
absolutely confident it is.  They challenge us to live by faith.
This must be what enabled Joseph to be so faithful while in Egypt.  Whether
serving Potipher, the jail master, or king, he lived as though the plans God
showed him in his dreams were actually going to come true, his current
circumstances not-with-standing.  

For the grieving Christian parent, they are being challenged to live as
though God does in fact work ALL things out for THEIR good.

Hi Chris,

I have read the book, and I think you did a good job of upholding some of 
the biblical arguments used in it.  The part about the Bible speaking to 
people being damned for their deeds is documented in the book.  He also does

not deny that we all inherit the sin of Adam.

He does an excellent job with the story of David, and he brought up things I

had never thought about.  He says that David was obviously comforted when 
the baby died.  He did not act like a person who would have been thinking 
that their baby was in a place of torment.

As to why so many Calvinists are hostile to this view, I don't know either, 
but John MacArthur includes a short section written by Phil Johnson in one 
of his lessons about a man whose child died in infancy, and he seemed to 
think there was something meritorious about believing his own child had gone

to hell.  Every chance he had he would bring up how he and his wife had come

to grips with the fact that their child was simply not among the elect. The 
man was certain that if God had elected that infant, he would have kept him 
alive long enough to bring him to faith.  Phil replied that he would have 
just as much biblical warrant to conclude that if God had decided NOT to 
elect the child, He would have kept him on earth long enough for the child's

heart to be hardened by sin and for his rebellion to be shown through 
deliberate actions.  Then he reiterates that whenever Scripture describes 
the inhabitants of hell, it always does so with lists of sins and 
abominations they have deliberately committed.

Towards the beginning JM talks about a panel he was on at a conference with 
three other pastors, and they were asked "What happens to babies when they 
die?"  The other three said they didn't know.  He was dismayed and says in 
the book, "How can a person be a pastor and not have an answer to that 
question?  How can a pastor even offer counsel or encouragement to those who

experience the loss of a child unless he or she has answers to the concerns 
of a grieving heart?"

I highly recommend the book.  It is very thorough, and if you know someone 
who is grieving the death of a baby, I can only say that I think it would be

a wonderful gift to give them.
