No, I don't think you're a bad Christian, so I wouldn't tell you that.
If you don't want to see the movie, that is your prerogative.
But just so you know, I too consider the 2nd commandment to be still
relative. Very relative.
When I read the text, it tells me not to fabricate my own gods with my
hands, idolizing them (considering them a deity) in worship and service -
for God is jealous. I can't create anything to worship in place of God
himself. That's what idolizing is, and that's what the rest of the command
talks about. This is not a peculiar understanding for scripture. The
golden calf is the strongest example. They didn't make the calf to
represent Jehovah and help preach about him or draw them into worshipping
Him. They crafted it as another god, and worshipped it as if it really were
an equal to Jehovah.
I'm curious, what text from the commandment convinces you these carved
images are representations of Jehovah?
Grace to you,
Steve

Steve,
I think your presuppositions are getting in the way of your reasoning.
You wrote: So David, what are you gonna do?
Go off ad-infinitum at him about why he shouldn't have seen it, why you
refuse to, how it wasn't preaching, it violated the 2nd commandment,
misrepresent the truth by teaching him how it is idol worship per Habakkuk,
convince him it is the slippery bane of modern churches which will lead him
to stay away from all churches......
David: I don't recall saying you shouldn't have seen it. I don't recall
saying I refuse to see it. Seeing the movie is a matter of Christian
liberty, but the fervor around it, and whether you agree or not the truth
is, people ARE replacing preaching with movies and fads and WWJD bracelets
and the Prayer of Jabez and 40 days of purpose books etc.
If you want to see it, see it. I am still undecided. My point is that
right now, I'm leaning towards not seeing it because I do think it violates
the second commandment. Now, on the other hand, you haven't given me any
reasons why I should go see it. So what are you going to do Steve? Tell me
I'm a bad Christian because I don't go see a hollywood production? Hold my
posts up and jest because I think the 2nd commandment is still relative in
this day and age?
But, to answer your question, I will defend truth as I find it in scripture.
I will disciple any who ask, and guess what? I don't need a movie to do so.
I find it odd that even though God has declared people don't like His word
and are at odds with Him, people think that somehow, they will want to see
it on the big screen.
David
