I think we're all agreed as to *why* Jesus died. But that does not begin to
answer the equally significant question....

Why did Jesus live?

can we become the sons of God and have the righteousness that is Christ's
imputed to us by His grace? Eph 1:4 "just as He chose us in Him before the
foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him
in love, 5having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to
Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6to the praise of the
glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7In Him we
have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the
riches of His grace"

Christ's cross work would we not be in a kind of "limbo?" Would we be not
guilty because we were forgiven and therefore could not be condemned and
lost, but not justified because we did not have an earned righteousness
credited to our account? Hence the necessity of the righteous life of
Christ, in addition to his death, being imputed to us.
