I think it's possible to get too literal... which is why I said had it been 
the rich man, the question would not have been necessary.  The very nature 
of the context of Paul being stopped in his tracks would have been enough 
that such a question is a moot point, regardless of whether he can hear or 
see "straight".

And.... I also think Luke is making that point in his choice of that 
question in the historical narrative (I think it's reductionist to assume we 
have the entire conversation between Christ and Paul in the narrative... we 
have what Luke -- and THE WORD -- wants us to have from that conversation, 
not the conversation in its entirety).
