Harry,
Though I would refer back to my relatively
in-depth posts over the last couple weeks
regarding "flesh" as "sinful nature", and though
I think it's a very bad translation, because it
is not correct biblical anthropology...
my only point in the "Modern Translations"
post is that the NIV is too interpretive.
One may choose to interpret "flesh" to be
"sinful nature" (a bad interpretation,
in my opinion), but one can't deny that it is
an interpretation. Better to translate such
passages by their original (in this case,
"flesh"), and let the scholars and students
hash out it's meaning.
Thanks,
Terry

Flesh as sin nature
I have been told:
"The Greek word sarx (meaning 'flesh') occurs 18 times in Galatians. The NIV translates it 8 different ways ('man', 'body', 'human effort', 'illness', 'ordinary way', 'sinful nature', 'outward impression', and 'flesh')."
Strong's gives a lengthy definition for sarx:
Although the most common is flesh it also has another meaning which would imply that sinful nature also fits (see #4)
Definition
flesh (the soft substance of the living body, which covers the bones and is permeated with blood) of both man and beasts
the body
the body of a man
used of natural or physical origin, generation or relationship
born of natural generation
the sensuous nature of man, "the animal nature"
without any suggestion of depravity
the animal nature with cravings which incite to sin
the physical nature of man as subject to suffering
a living creature (because possessed of a body of flesh) whether man or beast
the flesh, denotes mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from divine influence, and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God

While the NASB is more literal, and should
be in every library, I like to recommend the
NKJV, for it's combination of readability and
accuracy. Where it deviates from the more
literal, it usually will have a margin note
correcting itself (a little silly, but better than
nothing).
The NIV is too interpretive, even
translating "flesh" as "sinful nature", as I've
recently posted under another topic. Also,
they borrow from whatever underlying Greek
text they want to for an individual passage.
There are good arguments for both sides of
the "Majority vs. Ancient" text argument,
but there is no good argument for just
making it up as you go along with an
eclectic blend.
I have to admit to enjoying and getting some
light from The Message, as Peterson blasts
through some of my preconceived ideas, and
gets me to look at some passages in a fresh
way...but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone's
main Bible...way too interpretive.

Just curious which modern Bible translation do you
believe is the best for new Christians today to read?
Would you suggest the Message? The New Living
Translation? The NIV? Or a different one? Would you
preach from the same version or do you have another
preference? Are there version you would not touch with
a ten foot pole? Why?
Which do you like and why?
