Three possible reasons, taking care not to
judge the hearts of men:
1. The NIV is still wildly popular (unfortunately)
I believe our beloved JGR is a fan.
2. It is published by Zondervan, a genuine
"big buck" company, owned by Harper,
since they sold out their Chrisitian ownership
some years back
3. It's what they honestly felt was the best
translation (hard to believe, but possible)
I know that NKJV was chosen for the MacArthur
Study Bible, even though MacArthur is a definite
NASB guy. I've heard different supposed reasons.
One said that Lockman, the owner of NASB,
won't allow a man's name to be attached to the
NASB. One said it was a popularity/money
thing for the publisher.

I am often impressed by the MacArthur Study
Bible. Every study Bible is influenced by biases,
but the MSB is Reformed in it's soteriology,
and "feels" Progressive Dispensational in an
almost NCT way.

I would recommend the ESV for a new Christian. I almost always avoid using runing commentaries such as the Message and I just don't care for the NIV. My own favorite is the NASB but for pulpit or teaching I prefer the ESV. I'm no original language scholar so I have to employ all of the helps I can get my hands on. If I need a language scholar I call 1-555-nogreek. If that doen't help I call JGR.
