Thanks Moe for your insight.
I ask about translations as we are very close to moving forward with our church plant here in Tampa, FL and I would like to use one standard translation and encourage all in unity with this. My goal is not transfer growth but new converts since less than 90% of the area attends any church. I am looking for a Bible translation that does today what the original translators tried to accomplish with the KJV. If you have read the preface that they had written they wanted a Bible for the common man. I love the ESV, but it is not easy to find and it seems to be written for the more educated. The NIV, which I don't even own a copy of, seems to be written for the common man and is easy to buy one, even Walden's and B Dalton's carry them.
From a perception standpoint, some may see that if we use what they deem as an "obscure" translation, a similarity between us and cults who have their own special version of Scripture. Or maybe I am over thinking this!
I appreciate the counsel and the wisdom found here on the list and welcome everyone's opinion and comments on this. Is responsive reading using the NIV something you might cringe at? Hey, if its good enough for JGR, could it really be that bad?

Harry,
When it comes to Bible translations brethren are all over the map. I would just like to be able to get everyone back to a good pew bible so we can get some good responsive reading backing into our gatherings.
You also offered; "Maybe there is a need to promote a clearer understanding of NCT." To that I agree but I say with this wit all due respect. For starters we must begin with a proper understanding of Isaiah 42:6; 49:8, John 1, Acts 2 and 2Cor 3 or else we are just going to get muddled down in those all consuming disputations over law. They, those who oppose us, would like nothing better.
In His love,
Moe
