again, to "treat as" is not the same as "is". I may as a matter of
discipline turn away from my child for a period of time and "treat him as
if" he was not mine. Is he still my child? Yes. of course. Treat as is not
IS.
The church has the right and obligation to treat a professing Christian
living in sin "as" a pagan without ever declaring that he IS a pagan. We
must not and cannot usurp God's prerogative, as the RC church has so often
in the past. In fact, they would agree with those who say "treat as" is the
same as "is". I prefer to stay away from the RC practice.
