Does this help anyone one. I used it for a small group study on Wed.
nights.
The Old Testament in The New Testament: Study Guide
Our purpose for this study is to help us grow in the knowledge and the
grace of our Lord Jesus, by teaching us to properly interpret and apply
God’s Word to our lives. In the process we will actually study
hermeneutics and exegesis in an informal way, asking the Lord to
increase our love for Him and His word and comprehending His truth in a
clearer and more meaningful way. This study is not based on a textbook
or workbook, so there is not one to purchase. It is the result of
questions I have asked over my years of study by God’s grace.
The importance of properly understanding the author’s intent :
Direct quote
Indirect quote
Is the quote an explicit reference?
Is the quote an implicit reference?
Is the meaning of the quote changing in the context of the New
Testament or in relation to the New Covenant? Is the quote changed in
any way?
Does the context in the New Testament supercede or supplant the meaning
of the quote in relation to what it means in the Old Testament?
How does the understanding of the verse (s) quoted in the New Testament
affect the way you will read and interpret the Old Testament?
What is the primary purpose of the Old Testament?
What is the primary purpose of the New Testament?
How does understanding the “logical priority” of the New Testament help
us to have a fuller understanding of all the Bible is meant to be for
the New Covenant believer?
I believe Murray is correct.
Something to reason through: “Remember, the truth or the principle
found both in the life of the OT person (type) and in the NT
fulfillment possesses a single meaning though that meaning may have a
higher use as it relates to fulfillment. Randy Seiver, In These Last
Days, pg 191
