Given the forensic nature of propitiation/expiation, the law and the cross involve one and the same obedience: obedience unto death, even the death of the cross (the repetition of "death" and the Pauline parallelism between "death" and "death of the cross" makes it highly unlikely that Paul is speaking merely of the cross)... obedience to the law that had its endpoint in the cross.
