Yes there is authority in the reading of the Word but only as it relates to the Word itself and not to the person who is allowed to read. I would agree that there is authority in the person who speaks when they deliver the message but it seems that you also are assigning authority to the person the elder/speaker picks to read the Scripture. Is not the passage assigned to the person whom the speaker designates to read for the congregation? I would see authority in the person who assigns the passage as I would hope they would pick a text that applies to their message. If we take the position that you argue, would we not then have to eliminate all those who proclaim the Word in song or by instrument who are not elders? What if we sang a Psalm, would only the elders be allowed to sing? But the scripture *and* she are not void of authority. In the corporate setting, IMHO, we cannot dichotomize between the "reading of the Word" and the authority that it carries in that setting. There is authority in Word *and* speaker in that setting. IOW, this is *substantially* different from a wife reading the text to her husband at home. then again, I realize that this list isn't populated by those that invest much more meaning into the Sunday gathering than a public outing at the park on a Saturday. -- Pastor Chad Richard Bresson Clearcreek Chapel Springboro, OH http://breusswane.blogspot.com -- Read the Sound of Grace pages at http://www.soundofgrace.com To unsubscribe, send ANY message to: soundofgrace-unsubscribe@...
