From: muhenry@greenvillenc.com Otto Henry Subject: ancient-faces.12.hqx: mystic art show with music . ancient-faces.12.hqx Multimedia show, plays mystic music while morphing life-like portraits from the 3rd cent. A.D. Fayoum collection of Roman art. YOU NEED: OS 7 +, - 9 Quicktime, Sound Manager Realized on a Mac 8500 PPC (system 7.5.2). Virus checked. Compressed with Stuffit Lite. Free to individuals for their private enjoyment. Distribution by CD Rom and other means OK . Please notify by e-mail. The Fayoum Poraits are Roman in origin and were painted with oil on wood in Egypt ca. 200-250 A.D. They were face-boards bound over the heads of mummified corpses and intended to not only preserves the effigies of the dead, but also to help them "see" from the afterlife. They are amazingly life-like and modern, painted with a sense of reality, dimention and perspective that vanished from Europe during the Dark Ages, not to re-appear until the Renaissance. The individual personalities in the paintings seem to project themselves across the ages with a vivid presence. The portraits themselves are scattered among a dozen or so museums. View and learn about the portraits on the web at , the World Art Treasures URL. The portraits are used here with the kind permission from Dr. Jean Berger of the J.P.Berger Foundation. QUICKSTART: locate the ancient-faces.12 app. in the program folder and double-click to load it. To start and stop, press the space bar. You may have to hit the space bar several times to stop if you catch it between notes, so to speak. Sometimes spooky aftertones occur!! Do not remove the application from its original folder as it operates with hidden folders. The music plays on the Mac's internal speakers, Close by selecting "QUIT"from the Apple bar file. Type "s" to scroll the 19 portraits. Type"x" to turn the sound on and off. What you see: the images have been made into a move within a MAX patch and they are cycled back and forth at different rates until one is selected by a random process. This creates a kind of morphing effect of faces changing and growing as the frames flip by. Eventually all 19 portraits will be shown. What you hear: The music is derived from the numbers used to cycle the pictures, only they are interrupted and randomly skewed in a different fashion. The process is akin to an algorithm because there are "basins of attraction" created by interconnections that produce recognizable musical and rhythmic patterns. I used 3 sound samples, a flute, a kind of brass bass and a tamborine stroke. Howzitdone?: Max (Opcode- but, no longer supported by this co.) is an object-oriented program builder, you patch functional modules together in a kind of circuit, like the old Moog Synthesizer. The circuit patchers are hidden behind the black .pict background.

From: fprefect@umich.edu (Matt Slot) Subject: AppeWindows 2.03 If you have seen the Speech Manager, then you know that a background only application can put a window onto the screen (contrary to popular belief). The new Text Services Manager in System 7.1 offers documented hooks for creating, disposing, and handling floating windows. These windows are layer independent (they are floating above all programs and windows), and can work without patching traps (well, a quick jGNEFilter, but no traps). This program demonstrates a shell application that puts a TSM window onto the screen, and intercepts update, click, and key events. If you don't care to look behind the scenes, you simply write the handlers from the templates. If you want to see how it really works, you can lift the curtains and look in the other functions for yourself. Other programs that use this shell include: ObiWan, Extensions Strip, HoverBar, Virtual, and NotifyMail. Note: that Apple software uses the layer manager in undocumented ways to get the same effect for software such as AppleGuide, Control Strip, and the Speech Manager. Bug Fixes/Changes 2.01 -> 2.03 (2.02 was not released to the public) * Updated the TestScreenSaver() function to count to 3 before hiding/showing the window, which reduces flicker and stops the window from acting strangely during PopupMenuSelect(). * The jGNEFilter helper sets the current app's A5-world (not ours) so that it can call FindServiceWindow(), and we don't need to repeatedly test PtInRgn(). * Replaced the Fat WDEF with 68K and PPC parts to reduce footprint. * Fixed a memory leak with RmveResource() in Prefs code. * The sample drag handlers now setup and restore our A5-world. * Updated the process description for creating a Fat Binary. * Dropped the Symantec C code duplication for archive size. If you need help porting AppeWin, drop me a line. * Updated the bundled TSM Fix from 1.02 to 1.03. See the associated ReadMe file for relevant changes. * Updated documentation and comments. Its yours if you like it. This shell is free for you to modify and expand upon. Matt Slot, fprefect@umich.edu

For the uninitialised, an apronym is an a propos acronym... one which means something relevant to what it stands for. An example is MAC for My Apple Computer. Apronyms are a popular form of word play and can also be used as mnemonics. For more information, see http://apronyms.com/apronyms.html Apronyms runs on Mac OS X 10.2 or later. From: psheldon@utdallas.edu Subject: BanzaiSlider This version has more of the feel of sliding the maps as if they were huge virtual screens that you could zoom in and out of under the newton window (see BanzaiReader). Another new feature, unlimited zoomout with newton press pict books. Compatible with Garmin II and III (set at 4800 baud and with NMEA sentence filter) as well as Scoutmaster GPS (just set Scoutmaster's baudrate at 4800). Rich Drinkard, a beta tester, made some suggestions on activity sounds and map display and so that is improved. He also requested the unlimited zoomout. Evidentally his 28meg flashcard on a mp2100 could hold a very large map to find his way around. I believe we are going to see bigger than 4 meg flashcards officially supported by apple on the mp2100. Rich Drinkard reported me experiments that tripmate does speak NMEA sentences! So, I shall be working on a version for it! I am working on a mp100 Garmin II III and Scoutmaster version with limited features. Notice also the correction in spelling. This is embarrassing and in no way was intended as insulting. But, anyone with Japanese bilingual experience would pronounce Bonzai as "bone sigh" which would hardly get across the feeling of "Live 10,000 years" battle cry or "hip hip hooray". Thanks for avoiding this embarrassment are due Jimmie Jenkins with 20 years experience learning the Japanese language. Also, thanks are due to David Fiedler and Paul S. Hetrick who wished me luck dispite correcting my bad spelling first. I stand a Bonzai, duly pruned and thank my senseis. With Steve Weyer's newt and some helpful correspondence, I have been developing a newton gps navigator program for some years while doing a Ph.D. in theoretical physics with intensive background in differential geometry and carrying on international correspondence. Thanks are due this sensei, too. "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai in the 8th Dimension" movie inspired the name for my newton gps navigator program. I wanted a distinctive name that people would remember and I really loved and recommend that wonderful crazy video. Who can forget his gallant and wonderful remark when the crowd insulted his to be genius girlfriend : "Hey, don't be mean. Remember, no matter where you go, there you are!" I'd like people to think of that uplifting phrase when they use my gps program to go somewhere! The introduction to the movie spoke of his oriental background and capacity to go in many directions at the same time (he was a neural surgeon, rock star and race car driver and perhaps more that I can't remember). Well, if you pay the $15 dollar share ware fee, you will find out how you too can do "like Buckaroo Banzai" did, go in many directions or routes to be found on menus with my menu search engines. You will, with these routes, be able to adjust your speed to get an estimated time of arrival, "to aim your car in time as well". This is useful for actual racers and also for those of us who need to know how few minutes we actually save by driving recklessly! But, hey, something other than my program has to make "contact" and receive "those signals from outer space", the locator signals from our gps satellites. All gps programs need to be connected to such receivers. Garmin has cheap $130 gps receiver with serial and NMEA sentence output for the newton. I use a trimble scoutmaster gps, not so cheap but "way cool". They got me to understanding this stuff years ago, before other people had serial cables. I've got some urls from tidbits and perhaps some of you know of even cheaper gps receivers that will communicate with a newton. If you are thinking of buying tripmate for $125 upgrade price, think again, you might be tempted, in addition, to buy a Hooper for its internal cd. You can't fit a Hooper in your pocket when you leave your car and don't want your car broken into. GPSy (http://www.gpsy.com/) makes cables (I've made my own, but its a bear for me to figure). You will need instructions from me to use my program and instructions are an ongoing pruning process like people do with those Bonzai trees. The more people I help the better I get at instructing. For example, you will be able to use maps put in newton press books. You will learn how to make coordinate systems from Street Atlas USA 3.0 and 4.0 and set them in most recent street map versions from lycos or mapquest. Coordinate systems? Aren't they for people who do general relativity and aspire to go about in the 8th dimension? Hey, your imagination alone limits your usefulness and "Don't be mean...". Coordinate systems here associate latlons with points on the map pictures, it doesn't take a differential geometer or a Ph.D. in theoretical physics to use these things (only my instructions). In the words of Mr. John Bignewteye (thanks to Steve Deyo's wit), "Laugha while you can monkey boy!" And for only $5 more, you will also get automated route parsers that will tell your newton not only in what directions you will get where Buckaroo might have wanted to go, but also predict when you will achieve the milestone of getting there. My parsing experience started with mac programs dealing with pictures and sound going to the newton (free ware I submitted to the infomac archives). Now, with NTK (Newton Inc.'s Newton Tool Kit), I have continued making parsers on the newton. And Banzai will get you there by ------------talking------------- to you. I will put in some, as yet primitive, speech files, so you won't have to stare at the map while you drive. If you don't want to go with the parsers yet, I will merely send instructions on how to build files for Banzai and how to get the newton program slurpee. With slurpee, my free ware mac parsers alone (search my name at our web site for precise and easy spelling of the download links), you will be able to fill those empty menus you see on the current download. These menus that you put in are the places you want to go, the maps you put in, and the routes you have entered for yourself. Newton press is dynamite, don't miss it! mp2100 will have included a greyscale version. Banzai is going to have more advanced versions. For example, my menus of routes, maps, and places to go are getting so long that I have started to put in search engines to find things on the menus. When you get on Buckaroo's winning team, you too will be able to aim your car in time. You will be able to adjust your speed to get an estimated time of arrival. If you don't want to do this, at least rent the video, "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai in the 8th Dimension" and start to get the spirit. ;-)

From: Rob Goldstone Subject: Complex Adaptive Systems These simulations explore a variety of complex adaptive systems. Psychology, computer science, economics, biology, and neuroscience depend upon a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that govern adaptive systems. A common feature of these systems is that organized behavior emerges from the interactions of many simple parts. Ants organize to build colonies, neurons organize to produce adaptive human behavior, and businesses organize to create economies. To address the essential question of "What are the properties of complex adaptive systems?," simulations case studies of several systems are explored: chaotic growth in animal populations, human learning, cooperation and competition within social groups, genetic algorithms, leaf formation in pine cones, and the evolution of artificial life. The central idea running through all of the simulations is that widely different systems (businesses, ant colonies, brains) share fundamental commonalities.

All the tasks to launch are listed in a table, with a double click on a row you can define in details how many times and when to launch the referred task (program, document, applet) selecting it from the HD, and using for the schedule a daily, weekly, monthly and even yearly plan. Using Cronotask you can assign the tasks your Mac can perform for a whole year. Interface of Cronotask is simply amazing. It was realized taking full advantage of the new elements of apparence Manager available under System 8 (works also under Sys 7 using the new appearance control panel and extension). Using Cronotask is absolutely easy and fast, in few minutes you can setup your server automatic tasks. No code to digit or cripting language and code to learn (and forget), Cronotask uses Mac controls to specify parameters .It's not a unix porting, it's a true Macintosh program! When you look at a panel to specify a task you don't need to read manuals ! Cronotask is really a 'control station' for your Mac, using it you can run any maintenance task you like during the night, when your Mac is unattended without having to stop services during the day. Cronotask it's Mac only and this new version 1.1 as a finder like interface you'll love! Further info at

From: Arve Holt Subject: CrystalDesigner 7.0 I give permission for our program to be included on the Info-Mac CD-ROM. Abstract: CrystalDesigner is a tool for building, studying and visualising all kinds of crystal structures. CrystalDesigner is an ideal tool for both teaching and scientific studies. The software is intended to be used by students and teachers at colleges and universities, as well as in industrial research. What's new in CrystalDesigner 7.0? CrystalDesigner now allows visualisation of atoms on the corners of the co-ordination polyhedra. Further more, these atoms may be selected and if desirable deleted. If a corner atom is deleted, the co-ordination polyhedron will automatically be redrawn according to the new co-ordination. Beginning with this release it is also possible to record QuickTime movies. Additional main features: - Corner atoms of a co-ordination polyhedron may now be displayed and the size of the corner atoms may be adjusted by the end user - Colour shaded polyhedra may be displayed alternatively with black frames, colour frames or as previously without frames. - QuickTime movies may be created by adding frame by frame manually or by automatically recording all user actions. - Additional rotation controls have been added to allow a continuously rotation or a rotation by a given angle of the graphics. - Improved colour shading of atoms, bonds and polyhedra. - Support for hairlines when printing. - Online documentation (Mac OS 8.6 or higher). - Export of atom co-ordinates - - Density of the crystal structure is automatically calculated and displayed by using the unit cell view (Calculations assume 10027777767120ccupancy). - The distances to the nearest neighbours are now automatically displayed in the info window when an atom is selected by the end user. - Reduced prices - A hand full of bug fixes System requirements: - System 7.5 or higher - 4 MB available memory - 6 MB hard disk space - 68020 CPU or higher More information is available through Internet by visiting the home page of CrystalDesigner at or by sending . Thanks, Arve Holt Crystal Structure Design AS

The document "clicked" by the present WatchVol program may be a text document about what's new on the volume. Or it may be any application that somehow prepares the student how to use the (file server) volume, whenever the volume is mounted. Hot points: Dynamic (transient) patch of the system: doesn't require restarting the system, gets uninstalled when the application quits. Contents: WatchVol - Application (watchdog) itself Watch MountVol.pi - project and resource files to build it Watch MountVol.pi.rsrc WatchMount.cc - Source code of the main module (C++) launcher.cc - Launches an application-creator given FSSpec of the document/application MountVol init.pi - project to compile an Init (not INIT!) code resource that patches the system on-the-fly MountVol init.c - Source code of the _MountVol interceptor (assembly inlined into a dummy C program) The source code contains enough (I hope) comments to show what a particular piece of code does, as well as some tricks involved Language: Symantec C/C++ 6.0 and built-in Assembler System: System 7.x, uses AppleEvents. Tested on IIsi, IIci, Quadras and Centres. Patching the system: _MountVol system trap is patched when the application starts up. The patch is removed (i.e., the trap is restored to its original state) when the application quits. How to run: place the application into your "Startup Items" folder; the application quits when it receives a "QUIT" event, or when it's in the foreground and any keyboard key is pressed. Note: the source code uses a "standard" environment, see myenv-notify.cpt For completeness, the library and the .h file are included as a separate CompactPro archive.
