File Name: accounter-11.hqx (396 k)
Date: Nov 27, 2000
From: Burr Dodd Subject: Accounter Accounter is a straightforward cash book accounts system - a development within Excel98. (You need Macintosh Excel98 and a basic familiarity with that program). With Accounter you know where you are and where everything is because all entries are out in the open on a spreadsheet. Accounter lets you break down one or more accounts into as many categories as you wish. But you don't have to have a column for each category with the columns extending "out west" seemingly forever - no scrolling every time you make an entry. Accounter makes whole or part summaries of your accounts with a choice of how much detail you want. Accounter handles splitting up of debits and credits into sub entries and also lets you set up for one or more taxes such as Sales, Value Added or Goods and Services taxes. Accounter is simple to use but sophisticated. Shareware.

From: djsmall@dclink.com Subject: AccountsAuditor 1.0b2 (68K) Here is an updated version of AccountsAuditor. I thought it might be especially useful to those taking advantange the free upgrade to Quicken 98 now available. When my largest Quicken data file didn't convert correctly, AccountsAuditor was a significant aid. It helped me correct the faulty file and reassured me that my other data files were correctly converted. I wrote AccountsAuditor as a general utility for maintaining the integrity of Quicken data files. I developed the program to meet my own needs, and I'm offering it without charge to others who may find it useful. I am not associated with Intuit, Inc., publishers of Quicken. This program has not been reviewed or approved by Intuit, Inc. The program works by comparing the current, working file with a saved file to make sure that there haven't been any spontaneous changes to the data. I have experienced such spontaneous changes, perhaps as a result of system crashes that left a file too corrupt for Quicken to repair when it rebuilds the indexes. I've used several versions of Quicken, and it's possible that, other than the version upgrade difficulty I recently experienced, only older versions are subject to the problems this program is designed to detect. Personally, having had corrupted data in the past, I don't like to make any assumptions. This beta version of AccountsAuditor was developed under System 7.5.5 and has been tested mostly under that version of the Mac OS. It has been run but not thoroughly tested under System 8.5.1. As far as I know, it should run under System 7.0 or later; I don't know whether it can run under System 6. I did size the screens so that they will work on the classic Mac. The 68K version of the program requires at least 6000K of free memory; I've found 8000K is necessary for my largest file. The PPC version has been only minimally tested. If it causes trouble, try increasing its memory, or use the 68K version. According to Intuit's web site, Quicken 98 is designed to handle data from 1928 to 2027. Accordingly, this program interprets two-digit years as representing dates in that range. Changes from the previous version: Better handling of low-memory situations Recognizes commissions in investment accounts If a transaction has split fields, only the splits show category/class Dates interpreted as 1928 to 2027, instead of 1950 to 2049

From: Duane W Small Subject: AccountsAuditor 1.1 (68K) Here is Version 1.1 of AccountsAuditor. I wrote AccountsAuditor as a general utility for maintaining the integrity of Quicken data files. It should also work with other money management programs that can export data in QIF format. I have experienced a number of spontaneous changes in my files, including some with Quicken 98 (the most recent version I've used). I've also experienced changes once when performing a version upgrade. AccountsAuditor was developed under System 7.5.5. Recent revisions and my current use of the program are under System 8.6. As far as I know, the program should run under System 7.0 through 9.x. The program requires at least 8000K of free memory; a large file can require two or three times that amount. Version 1.1 introduces two changes: Dates are now interpreted in accordance with date format settings in the Date & Time Control Panel, instead of assuming the date format conventional in the US. A consequence of this change is that dates with four-digit years are forced into the same range (1928 - 2027) as dates with two-digit years. To accommodate newer versions of Quicken (including future versions), as well as other money management programs, lines in the export file may now be of unlimited length. They previously were limited to the the maximum length exported by Quicken 98.

These plug-ins make it faster and easier to exchange information - either in familiar paper forms converted to PDF, or as dynamic interactive database publishing. The Forms Update allows you to bring the rich capabilities of PDF to the data collection process that comprises an online information transaction. As expected, PDF forms retain the rich look and feel of their paper equivalents. The following example illustrates how the Adobe Acrobat Forms Update can be used to replace a traditional paper form for ordering business stationery.

File Name: address-book-10.hqx (1132 k)
Date: Dec 12, 2004
From: Jonathan Scott Subject: Address Book 1.0 ©2004 by Jonathan Scott This is a pretty standard address book program. There are a few features though that most other address books don't have. Birthdays You can enter in a birthday for any given entry, and if you also hilite the "BDay Alert" option, each time you return to that page of your address book, you'll be able to see exactly how old the person is. You can also click the "Show BDs" button and the software will show you a list of all of the people that will have birthdays in the current month. You can also export a birthday list from the software that my other piece of shareware (Things to Do) can import. Importing the list will make it so that Things to Do will remind you of all of the birthdays in your database. Copy Mailing Address You can visit any page and click the "Copy Me" button to have that page's name and mailing address copied to the clipboard. You can then paste the software into your word processor or anywhere. It should work on any mac system from system 9 and up, although in OS X, it might not be visually attractive. It may also work on older systems, but I do not have the hardware to be able to verify this.

From: Bas Meijer Subject: Add-Strip 3.4: Superior Text processing utility Add-Strip 3.4 - TEXT documents created on a PC or a mainframe are invariably formatted inappropriately for use on a Macintosh. They often contain unnecessary control characters, carriage returns, the wrong kind of quotation and apostrophe marks, and so forth. Manually reformatting these documents can be a tedious and time-consuming task. Add/Strip (A/S) has been designed to automatically perform much of the work of cleaning up TEXT files destined for import to page layout, word processing, database, or spreadsheet programs, as well as export from these programs to a PC or mainframe computer. All in a fraction of the time needed to manually reformat using a word processor. It can also batch-search-and-replace a folder of textfiles with up to 250 replacements, begin-of-file & end-of-file inclusions.

File Name: alias-menu-312.hqx (1380 k)
Date: May 20, 2004
From: ChrisLi@bridge1.com Subject: AliasMenu for Mac OS X 3.1.2 This download contains the English, French, and Japanese localizations in a single application package. AliasMenu adds customized menus to the menu bar. Each menu extra has a corresponding folder and the menu automatically reflects the folder's content. Create your own menus for Preferences, favorite Folders, often used Applications, an Internet menu including applications and web bookmarks, a Documents menu, a Utilities menu... Possibilities are endless. Any folder you create for AliasMenu instantly becomes an extra menu. The menu name can be replaced by an icon, to make it nicer or to save room in the menu bar and add more menus. Simply paste a custom icon on the folder. Version 3 has been entirely rewritten for Mac OS X and is fully Panther compatible. * Create Any Number of Menus: User-defined menus are actual menu extras, like the clock or volume menu. If you have a large screen, you can easily add as many as 15 or 20 menus. Submenus are supported. * Open Every Kind of Items: As did the old Apple menu, AliasMenu opens any object placed in one of its menus: applications, documents, folders, servers, scripts, and even URLs. * Powerful Keyboard Shortcuts: AliasMenu uses the 'ctrl' key by default instead of 'command' for the keyboard shortcuts, to avoid "collisions" with the applications' shortcuts. Assign shortcuts to anything, including folders and Internet bookmarks! [3.1.2] This is a bug-fix update. In some situations, a custom icon used as a menu title could freeze the menu auto-updating. What's new in version 3.1? * Alias icons are now displayed from the original files. The little alias arrow is gone from the menus (Yay!). * Masking of numeric prefix is now optional. A new check box in preferences lets you choose to hide numerix prefixes in file names. * Automatic link with AliasKeys. Any file appearing both in AliasMenu and AliasKeys will be displayed in the menu with the keyboard shortcut defined in AliasKeys. Both products are designed to work separately, nonetheless AliasKeys brings much more complete choice and ease to define shortcuts.

From: bsharvy@efn.org Subject: Asset Basset 2.51 Asset Basset tracks investments, specializing in asset allocation. It will perform the following useful functions: 1) It tracks allocation in various asset classes (foreign/domestic, equity/bond, small-cap/large-cap, etc.). A unique feature is the ability to allocate percentage amounts within a single investment; for example, a mutual fund 60 46n stock and 40 46n bonds can be accurately represented in Asset Basset By enabling percentage allocations within an investment, Asset Basset lets you monitor the allocation and performance of your investments with a precision limited only by your knowledge of your own investments. 2) It lets you define portfolios using allocation criteria, e.g., "foreign" or "foreign fixed-income" and monitor the performance of the portfolio. 3) It calculates the cost-basis of each investment, using either the average-cost or first-in-first-out methods, and generates tax-reports of capital gains and distributions for any year. 4) It calculates total profit using the time-value of money, with methods such as the internal rate of return, and the discounting/compounding of cash flows. 5) It keeps track of total worth, out-of-pocket cost, and so on. "Asset Basset 2.51 app" is a standalone application (previous versions were Hypercard stacks). Asset Basset will be very slow on a 68K Mac without a math co-processor. From: peter@stairways.com.au Subject: Assimilator 2.0.1 Assimilator is designed for Macintosh lab situations where you want to make all the harddisk's in a lab look almost identical. When the Assimilator program is run on a lab Macintosh it will mount an AppleShare file server and then make the harddisk look more or less exactly like a pre-specified source folder on the server. It does this by throwing away (into the Trash) any files or folders that don't belong or are different and downloading any missing files. Icon positions, folder views, finder flags and so forth are all corrected on the client Macintosh to match the source folder. Although it is designed for student lab situations, it has also proven useful in other circumstances, such as for setting up newly purchased Macs or in testing or demo labs. New in version 2.0.1: * Single log file on the system disk. * Fixed problems with Alias resolution. * Fixed the balloon help. * Fixed import database to work with 1.x databases. * Changed memory allocation in Assimilator. * Various other minor changes and bug fixes. New in version 2.0: * Powerful new customization features. * Handle multiple partitions. * Restrict to portions of volumes. * Support AppleShareIP over TCP/IP. * Support assimilation from CD and local volumes. * Execute protected scripts and applications. * Fixed several bugs. Assimilator requires System 7 and a harddisk. Assimilator is shareware, $10 per Mac or $500 for a site license. Desc: Unlike other tools in this category, this program raytraces through a three-dimensional cloud density that represents the wavefunction's probability density and presents its results in real-time (up to 48 frames per second on the latest hardware). The user interface is very interactive and provides a wide degree of flexibility. It contains all 140 eigenstates up to the n=7 energy level and the allowed spectral transitions between those eigenstates. It also allows a state formed by a superposition of up to eight of those eigenstates allowing for over 3 trillion possible states. File Name: background-calendar-10.hqx (576 k)
Date: Dec 28, 2000
From: Saint John Subject: Background Calendar v1.0 Everyone needs a calendar. Not everyone needs a scheduling program. Background Calendar is a low-impact, easy-to-use solution for most needs. It has a lot of options, but once you like the way it looks, you don't have to fiddle with it any more. A lot of your computer experience is based on real artifacts. A word processor's measurement bar looks like a typewriter's margin slider. A database program may have a display like a Rolodex. To discard a document, we put it in the trash. This technique frees us from having to learn different ways of doing things when we're using a computer; it's good sound cognitive psychology. It's hard to beat a paper calendar for ease of use. All you have to do is hang it up where you'll see it when you need it, and remember to flip the page every month. You can write on it and check it easily to see what events you have coming up in the next two days, this day next week-- whatever. By comparison, scheduling programs require learning, have little to do with the way we use these existing artifacts, and must be specially launched-- they aren't always available. It is with this in mind that I wrote Background Calendar. The Desktop Picture is available at all times. Sure, it may be blocked by windows, but there are easy ways to get rid of them momentarily. So, Background Calendar is like a paper calendar: it's always available. If you have more than one screen, it's particularly handy to set it up on one of them which is left relatively uncluttered. Writing on it? Easy. We have another real-world artifact called the "Post-It Note." On the Macintosh, they exist as "Stickies." So: Why not use them as little "reminders" on a "calendar?" When run, Background Calendar will generate a calendar for the current month, with whatever options you have selected-- such as outlining the current date, applying colors, leaving margins, drawing on top of an existing desktop picture, and so forth-- and then sets the desktop picture of your preferred monitor to the result. You'll always have a current calendar at your fingertips!

From: Ken Ferris Subject: BookCovers v1.1.2 (formerly BookMarks v1.0) This is an update of the program BookMarks v1.0. Mostly the name has been changed to satisfy Kagi, as there are many programs with the name BookMarks, so now we have BookCovers v.1.1.3 with new documentation and graphics and some minor fixes. BookCovers is a simple book database program, for storing references to all the books you read. If you have ever got to the point where you can't remember the name of a book that you read a while back, or maybe you're at the used book store and you see some good prices on your favorite authors books, but... hmm...maybe I've already read Tom Clancy's oldest save the world book. Or did I just see the movie. (aren't they all made into movies?) Which was it? Well this program is designed with you in mind. (actually I wrote it for myself originally) BookCovers will allow you to catalog all your book reading, past and present. Entering as much info or as little info as you want. (You must however at least have a title to the book) You can save the Title of the book, the Authors name, the Type of book it is, comments of yours about the book, the date you read it or finished reading it and it also has a place to enter the books ISBN number, if you like. BookCovers also has a simple printing facility, allowing you to print out your listing of books, for those of you who can't have enough paper to read. BookCovers comes with itÕs own installer and will automatically install the program, the Read Me file as well as a Docs file and the Register Application, onto your hard disk. Before registering BookCovers, you will be limited to entering only 10 books. The PPC version of BookCovers requires a PowerPC computer running version 7.6.1 or greater of Mac OS. A 68k version is in the works and will be offered at a later date. BookCovers is offered as shareware. You may register BookCovers via the included Register Application from Kagi. A Single User License costs $10 per user. To contact the author, that would be myself, Ken Ferris. I can be reached at . BookCovers version 1.1.3 BookCovers Blurb version 1.5

From: rkr@dino.nci.nih.gov Subject: Bookends Plus 4.1 Demo Bookends Plus is the leading reference management/bibliography generation application created exclusively for the Macintosh. As a Mac-first and Mac-only product, Bookends has long been a leader in adopting MacOS technologies, including AppleEvents, QuickTime, and Apple Guide on-line help. Bookends is also the only Macintosh product of its kind that can serve its contents on the Web in real-time, allowing multiple users to share, and even add or edit, information with users around the world on any platform. The latest version of Bookends is even more tightly integrated with the Web than its predecessors, and will take advantage of the latest in Apple's QuickTime technology to expand the boundaries of reference management. The ability of Bookends to display any QuickTime-compatible graphic and to open any document for viewing or editing in the application that created it makes it a powerful tool for virtually any kind of information management. Among the recent improvements to Bookends Plus are: * Bookmark web sites in Bookends and go to them directly from a Bookends database. * Import references directly from the clipboard (makes importing references from the web a snap). * The ability to format a footnote differently depending on whether it is being cited for the first time or after an initial citation. This is particularly useful for footnotes or bibliographies using styles for the humanities. * Expanded graphics support. You can view any type of document supported by QuickTime 3 (available at no cost from Apple Computer). In conjunction with the Attach feature, this means that you can examine virtually any kind of graphic (diagram, picture, plasmid map, chemical structure, even video) from within Bookends. * Web users can edit references in a Bookends database via the web (with a password protection option). This is a free evaluation copy of Bookends Plus which can also be downloaded from the Sonny Software web site (www.sonnysoftware.com). All features are enabled in the evaluation copy except that databases are limited to a maximum of 15 references. Once purchased, Sonny Software will supply a registration number that will "unlock" the evaluation version and remove this restriction. This new release of Bookends Plus supersedes all other versions of Bookends. Visit our web site to learn more about Bookends and download an evaluation copy and complete electronic manual. From: "Bruce A. Pokras" Subject: budgetBoss 1.1 - home budgeting aid budgetBoss(TM) 1.1 Copr. 1993, 1999 Bruce A. Pokras - All rights reserved worldwide Requires: HyperCard(R) Player 2.3 or higher (probably already on your Mac whether you know it or not), or any version of Hyper-Stack Player; a Mac having a 68030 processor or faster is preferred Changes in this version: Eliminated a bug which would prevent registered users from importing more than ten Expense Records. Take charge of your finances with budgetBoss! BudgetBoss gives users the information they need to plan ahead for those pay periods where bills seem to be all due at once. BudgetBoss takes information about your pay schedule and your expenses, and generates a list of your expenses for the whole year, grouped and totaled by pay period. In this way, users are warned well in advance of those instances where lots of bills are due in a short amount of time. The list also lets you see in advance those rare pay periods where less bills than usual are due. If you find that some bills are grouped too closely to payday to allow you to pay them by mail on time, budgetBoss' "Mailing Delay" feature can eliminate that problem. You set the Mailing Delay to the number of days you need to comfortably pay by mail. This adjusts the grouping of expenses so that those that are due too close to payday are grouped for payment with the previous pay period. The power of BudgetBoss is that it allows you to save the list that it generates in a form that is specially formatted to be opened as a "live" spreadsheet by a spreadsheet program. The spreadsheet uses a formula to add up your expenses for each pay period, so you can insert last-minute expenses and the total will instantly update. Alternatively, you may save the list of expenses as a text file which can be opened and printed by any word processing program. Shareware $10 May be registered worldwide through the Kagi payment service Brought to you by the Mac-Stacks Emporium: http://www.kagi.com/mac-stacks

As there's an excellent bus service in a town, a bus comes every five minutes. You can see a route number, persons, sparrows and a bench. The route number indicates an hour. A person comes every one minute. A sparrow appears every five minutes. A bench has an ad on its back. It changes everyday. You can set your strings for it. Enjoy!

From: oleg@pobox.com Subject: Advanced i/o & arithmetic compression Attached is an updated version of c++advio, an advanced i/o & arithmetic compression classlib, Mac distribution. The new version is more portable: besides a Mac, the source code compiles and correctly runs on various UNIX boxes (Sun/Solaris, HP 9000/7xx, FreeBSD, DEC Alpha), and even Win95/WinNT. The package pulls off a few tricks (like accessing a single file buffer from several (byte/bit/compression) streams, or substituting a base class in a compiled hierarchy). Yet the package compiles and correctly works with both GNU (libg++) and a template-based Modena C++ stream libraries (in CodeWarrior's Metrowerks Standard Library, MSL C++). For the first time, this release of c++advio includes a Vocabulary package, (poly/homo)morphic dictionaries with a dynamic "inheritance" path. The new version also adds a few utility C++ functions, and code to validate them. c++advio: Various advanced i/o codings of streams of integers Keywords: arithmetic coding, start-stop coding, endian i/o, compression, fall-back Hot points: - variable-bit coding of sequences of integers (including the Arithmetic compression) - explicit endian specification in dealing with integer streams - a trick of sharing a stream buffer (a "file") among several streams - with a validation code to verify everything - simple database service (vocabulary) featuring polymorphism, late binding, and dynamic inheritance - with a commented source and CW11 projects Please see a README file for more details. Contents: README - tells what this is all about and how to use it c++serv.dr - tells what the other files are for libserv.a - compiled PowerMac library libserv.pi - project to make it *.h, *.cc - source code v*.cc - verification code (test cases) test suite.stat - stationary for validation projects Run Validation Tests - AppleScript applet to run them ANSI #includes addenda - portability extensions (for non-gcc compilers) Language: C++, CodeWarrior11 System: System 7.x (7.5.5) but probably 6.x is OK, too.
