Undefiled Religion

James 1:27 reads “Pure religion and undefiled before
God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless
and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself
unspotted from the world.” Many, even some that are
children of God, ignore this passage. To maintain our
purity, we must “visit the fatherless and widows.”
This is not just simply going to see how they are but
also taking care of any needs they may have. In its
literal translation, the above passage reads “Pure and
undefiled religion before [our] God and Father is
this: to be caring for orphans and widows in their
affliction [and] to be keeping oneself unspotted
[fig., uncorrupted] by the world.” Clearly the church
(remember that the church is the people of Christ and
not a building) has a responsibility to provide for
the needs of widows and orphans. Some believe that
helping these two groups cannot come out of the
treasury of the church in general but must be
individual efforts. James 1:27 proves this is not the
case. Individuals and the church may choose not to
help orphans and widows but they then risk becoming
defiled and impure. God demands purity in His children
so let us not forget to take care of those that need
our help.

In Christ, Steve Preston
