You can use the Toolbox routine SPBOpenDevice to open an input device, and
SPBSetDeviceInfo to set various features about the device, including the gain.
Apparently you can also use SPBSetDeviceInfo to set the "sound source" (like
CD, external mic, etc.)  It's not clear to me what the difference is between
the "input device" and the "sound source."

About a week ago I posted a sound input demo which shows how to use the 2
routines mentioned above plus a few others.  Look for "AIFF" in the subject--if
you can't find it, I'll email it to you privately.
