Greetings -

Recently I have started having problems with the SOUND Command on my
primary computer (machine #1 in the list below). When I use the SOUND
command synchronously (i.e. SOUND 300,30,,_False), no sound is made
and program hangs - I have to Force Quit. When I use the SOUND
command asynchronously (i.e. SOUND 300,30,,_zTrue), no sound is made
but the program continues. So it seems that the sound is never
started, and thus never finishes playing - which hangs the program
when it is waiting for the finish (i.e. synchronously). The SOUND
Command has always worked before, was working fine several weeks ago
on my primary computer (machine #1), and continues to work fine on
the 2 other machines that I have tried. I am using FB4 r3, but
compiled code from older versions of FB seems to act the same way. I
would suspect something in the operating system.

The 3 machines I have tried (all are running OS 10.4.7) are:
  1. iMac 2.1 GHz PowerPC G5 - 20" screen with iSight (my Primary machine)
  2. iMac 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 - 17" screen
  3. iMac 800 Mz PowerPC G4 - 17" screen

Additionally, Machine #1 (but not #2 & #3) seems to have developed
sound problems in certain other circumstances:
-> The quicktime movie of the WWDC 2006 Keynote address
(http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/aug_2006/event/index.html) has
no sound, but the 'Watch "The PC Guy" deliver his own greeting to the
attendees of the annual Worldwide Developers Conference' clip does.
-> The 'Dancing Comedian' clip posted at
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygOnkXbJXmg> no longer has any sound.

ITunes works fine, as do several other quicktime movies that I have tried.

I don't know for sure that these events are related, but it seems likely.

On Tue, 14 Feb 2006, Alain Wrobel posted a similar problem:
> Since a few days the use of "SOUND" statements cause my application to
> freeze up, same problem with the simple "FB sound commands"example file.
> Any idea ?

Bernie replied:
> FYI, "FB sound commands" works here. FB4.2, PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz, OS
> X 10.4.4.

and then Alain posted:
> Merci Bernie, problem resolved with a "LaunchServices database rebuilt"

Following this hint, I did the following:
1. Ran the maintenance scripts using 'MacJanitor'
2. Ran 'Rebuild LaunchServices Database 1.0' from
3. Ran Techtools Pro 4.1.2

None of this seems to have had any effect on the SOUND problem.

Anybody have any ideas?
