An alternative perspective if I may:

Bernie's code uses NSTextView's beginEditing/endEditing to implement this new feature. Since there is no easy way for the NSLog code to know if turning on this feature is necessary, "automatic" seems synonymous with the feature always being on. Always being on implies extra overhead all the time. Plus, I wouldn't use this new feature very often ( if ever ), so to me the default behavior should be what most people use.
